lab hours 5/12

yesterday I spent at least 5 hours working on my inventory, yes I procrastinated. however I'm pretty sure I thought about it and did a bit of research about an hours worth during the week otherwise.

With this being our last post I must say I have enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. At first I was SUPER excited, then ...eh... and now I'm sad to see it end. It as been a great learning experience and while I personally feel like I have soooo much more to learn about everything (museums, baskets, life, exhibitions) I have such a greater appreciation for all that goes into them.

Thus this has been an amazing experience and since im not sure if we have to post a blog next week.... It has been fun.

I also plan to help a lot with the take down portion, unless Dr.C plans to do that ll herself on monday. then I cannot help. boo.

Moccasins

So there are some moccasins in the Collections book I have, I will be in the museum today from 115 till about 3 working on my stuff. so if you wanna come and look at the book I have... I'm bringing it. awesome.

I spent about an hour and a half going through the Native American Art Magazine. I wrote down a few websites to check out to see what I can find on my objects that aren't baskets. However i will be doing this after 11am, but if I find anything good I plan on adding another post so everyone else can enjoy them too.

Also I get to show the museum off to my mom who's coming to see it today.... so everyone might get to meet her depending on when she arrives! hurray! I'm super excited. =)

This week I spent an hour or so going through the American Indian Art magazines. Otherwise I've spent a number of hours reading the articles and other peoples posts about the assignments. I found all of them very interesting.

I feel the end of the semester ticking closer and closer.... if only it would tick more slowly.

Repatriation

“2. Notice of Intent to Repatriate Cultural Items: Oakland Museum of California, Oakland, CA (March7,2003). In 1927 the Oakland Public Museum (now the Oakland Museum of California) received a donation of two nineteenth-century wooden human carvings, seventeen- and eighteen-inch-tall “shamans' power figures.” Tribal representatives stated these objects are required by contemporary Quinaults for the observance of their traditional religion. Having met NAGPRA's requirement for status as “sacred objects,” the carvings were due to be repatriated to the Quinault Tribe of Quinault Reservation, Washington"(American Indian Art, Vol. 29(3):102, Summer 2004).

In 1912 the museum received eighteen shell beads removed from a burial at Florida's Shield's Mound Complex site, occupied between 500 B.C. And A.D. 1562. The Museum classified the beads as 'unassociated funerary objects” under NAGPRA, and announced its intention of transferring them to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida" (American Indian Art, Vol. 29(3):103, Summer 2004).

In 1975 the museum received a donation: a buckskin Apache gaan mask, a “sacred object” as defined by NAGPRA which the museum agreed to convey to the Mescalero Apache Tribe of the Mesalero Reservation, New Mexico"(American Indian Art, Vol. 29(3):104, Summer 2004).

Each of these repatriations are from the same issue of American Indian Art, I thought the magazine itself was interesting and had a lot of useful information in them. I may use it to look up information on my basket and more likely my other items.

so for this week, I spent about an hour in the library looking up and finding catalogs. I found one on southern California basketry which i am pretty excited about. sadly, aside from this and then working on the assignment, that is it for myh lab hours this week.

No exciting news this week either. I am really excited about starting to look into our objects. I took about 15 minutes to read through everyone's blog.

This position is responsible for assisting with the ethical and effective handling of accession and registration matters, cataloging and processing of objects. The digital registrar maintains the collections management database and barcoding system. They are responsible for cataloging and maintaining objects, photographs and digital files of the collections in the collections department. The digital registrar administer and file hard-copy and digital gift receipts, accession review forms, accessions, numbering, cataloging and photography of objects. This position is responsible for designating proper storage for collection items and keeping location records for items in storage, on exhibit and on loan (in or out). Lab hours

This weekend was rather unsuccessful, but full of useless work at a coffee shop.

Today however with meeting up of my team we narrowed down what needed to be finished and completed what we could. however we do plan on going back over everything again tomorrow before class.

Quest for 1971 State Fair poster

i spent about 2 hours at the state library and archives looking for the 1971 state fair, but no luck. I fear I will no be able to find it. phooey.

I will make some phone calls tomorrow in the am and see if any one has any idea.

but for now I will be working on the language bit of the presentation.

Friday ३/12

So today and at other points this week, of which i cant remember,I have been doing research online and I think i went to the library on thursday....

Library - helpful, considering i had yet to go to the Sacramento Public library since i've moved here. however what i was looking for was not what i found, so i have continued looking.

I've searched and called a few places and now e-mailed, attempting to get a hold of the 1971 state fair poster/advertisement. hopefully this pulls through, but if not We still have the documentation. =)

lets seee.... I met with Dr. Castaneda today to go over where i was at and what needed to be competed. I feel i have a better understanding of what is to be done. Hurray! also petrus and i and Dr.C spoke about all of the little bits and peices that we are attempting to put together and i really understand how great it is that this class gets to do it. =)

and i spent about a half hour in the CSUS library looking for/at the Sac Hornet and amazingly found 2 articles in the first book i opened about mendocino hall and the museum! hawoo! (haha im leaving that because i corrected myself when it was spelled correctly to be spelled that way.

and i think on that note, im done for the evening.

extension of Monday

The trip to the special collections was fun, looking at the history of CSUS, however they did not have campus maps, or anything of that nature there; thus the hunt continues. but I managed to get a nice picture of Dr. Reeve and Dr. Crane (again I dont remember why I needed him, but his name was in my notes).

My drawing of team 3's portion of the exhibit is not super great and it's kinda small, but hopefully people will get the point =) and I started to place how things may end up looking on the board. but for now im done for the evening.

monday Morning

This morning, I got up early and bought a poster board, glue sticks, and ink for my printer. Then spent two hours deliberating over what is supposed to go on it.

I cropped photos of tags, found pictures of Dr. Reeve and Dr. Benson (which I cant remember if I needed that or not) from pictures of the history of archeology at csus.

I hadn't heard from my team over the weekend, so I am working off of just what was discussed at our meeting on friday.

For today I plan to print some things out to place on the board, as well as, draw up how I think our portion of the museum will flow. Also I will be leaving for school early to stop in at the special collections to work out where the anthro dept/ museum artifacts have traveled around the campus. \

Team meeting

Team 3 met with Dr Castaneda today and got the ball rolling for what we are supposed to be doing.

Im pretty excited about it. I have already drawn up some plans for the portion of the museum display, as well as, found some points that will be needing more research.

One question that perhaps Dr. Castaneda or Amanda can answer is when some of the items were on display at Cal Expo? The library may have a poster from that event or a flier. that may be neat to include in the display.

Also if available the poster/card from when some items were on display in 2002?
is this the exibit?

I attempted to go to the special collections in the CSUS library today, but they are on furlough so I will try again on monday. But I do feel that is the place to go to find where all of the museums collections have been moved around the anthro dept. until its current place in Mendocino hall. Spent some time searching online for news articles about the renovations at sac state. I hope to take a look a them at the library at some point this weekend.

Rather uneventful week

While Laura and I did complete our Deed of Gifts assignment, that seems to be the bulk of what I did for this class this week aside from the readings.

Along with meeting up with Laura and the following research I probably spent a little over 2 hours putting it together. and I think I had a bit more fun doing it than I thought I would.

so I havent decided which one I would like on the postcard. While I think this basket is beautiful, I would rather use one of the other objects to show how diverse the collection is. I would like to use the dress, but only if a picture can be taken on a form, to give it some shape; otherwise the gloves are my choice for the postcard.

Museum Feelings

So I have decided to write a separate post about how I feel about the museum and all of its processes. I feel overwhelmed and excited and nervous all at the same time. a good portion of that is most likely because ive never been on this side of the museum before and hearing about all of the steps makes it seem that much more intense.

On the positive side of things, I am super excited to help and get things together. I think I will help out on team 3. But anywhere that anyone needs a hand and I can help I will. haha.

Lab hours

This week I have spent some time going over the accession file and looking through all of the wonderful pictures of the collection. I also spent some time in the museum getting my objects out, HURRAY! and also helping to clear out some things that were no longer needed.

This week I have done a small bit of looking for info on Carl Purdy. All I've really found is that he is from Ukiah... I think. I will find more info soon, I always feel more energized after class to get everything done. Hopefully it starts to occur more often. =)

while I had hoped to get more research done on what exactly NAGPRA is, my weekend was full with my daytime job instead.

I agree with everyone else that the theme should focus around the cottons, but do we know if any of their collection had to be given back through NAGPRA? IF so that would be a neat little bit of info to touch on. I also liked the idea of showing, perhaps just in the cases, what a "authentic" vs. "Tourist" item would look like. My grandmother has a WHOLE BUNCH of tourist stuffs and I like to think if she would have know that's all it was for she wouldn't have some much? eh. wishful thinking.

As for titles..... Object, Collector, NAGPRA : the life story of (something). the word isn't coming to me. =P

I think an issue with the following a fake item is making sure people know its fake.... but I also get easily confused.

Lastly, I have yet to see my items!!!! OMG! but I do know that I have a fiber, a basket, and bead work. what they are I don't know.... but once i do you will too! HURRAY!

Off to do some more research.

I have spent a couple of hours looking at other colleges museums. Penn state, which I believe has a more "full time" staff of people running theres, had an exhibit that would have fit for us;but sadly their information was lacking as to what it entailed.

I also spent some time looking for a sort of quick reference museum dictionary and had little luck finding what I was looking for.
